IBIZA 2022 crowns the U15 European champions
The great celebration of badminton concludes with the award ceremony for the European U15 Championships.
IBIZA 2022 has finished after two weeks of intense competition, crowning the winners of the European U15 Championships.
It has been a good championship of Spanish team, thanks to Ibizan Yaidel Gil, bronze in the men’s singles, and the mixed doubles of María Luisa Jiménez and Mario Rodríguez, who also won the bronze.

The medals were presented by the president of Badminton Europe, Joao Matos, the president of the Ibiza Council, Vicent Marí, the Conseller of Sports, Salvador Losa, the mayor of Ibiza, Rafael Ruiz, the president of the Spanish Badminton Federation, Andoni Azurmendi , and the president of the Balearic Federation of Badminton, Silvia Riera.
On the final day, there was time for a local exhibition, as the members of the Sa Colla de Labritja Cultural Association starred in a traditional peasant dance that brought the attendees to their feet.
About the winners, the favorites fulfilled the predictions: the men’s singles gold medal was for the Portuguese Tiago Berenguer, who started as first seed and beaten the French Arthur Tatranov (21-14 and 21-11 in 29 minutes).
The gold of the women’s singles was for the Turkish Aleyna Korkut, second favorite. Of course, she had to make an effort against the French Leana Laurent, who sold face defeat (21-18 and 21-19).
The excitement has multiplied in the finals of the doubles by gender. The equality has been maximum and in both cases the winner has been decided in the third set. The women’s final started well for Romania’s Daria Gherasim and Cristina Sirbu, but Turkey’s Elifnur Demir and Zeynep Ocakoglu leveled things up in a heart-stopping second set. Finally, Gherasim and Sirbu have managed to resolve the match (21-16, 21-23 and 21-16).
The men’s doubles title was also decided in the third set, in an all-Danish final. Jens Andersson and Aske Roslyng came from behind their compatriots Mikkel Bouet and Frederik Hinding in a match that was decided by small details (15-21, 21-14 and 21-15).
The mixed doubles final was also entirely Danish, pitting Jens Andersson and Athene Thornild against Mikkel Bouet and Eline Landsvig. This was the fastest match of all, as Andersson and Thornild won with authority 21-12 and 21-11 in just 20 minutes.

Badminton is being breathed in Ibiza during almost the entire month of September, as it is chaining three international tournaments whose grand finale will be the European U15 Championships. Thanks to the invaluable support of the Consell Insular d’Eivissa and the Eivissa City Council, and the predisposition of the Balearic Badminton Federation and Badminton Ibiza, this city is the Spanish and European capital of badminton.
