IBIZA 2022 crowns the IBERDROLA champions Spanish International

IBIZA 2022 crowns the IBERDROLA champions Spanish International

The first big day of IBIZA 2022 crowned the champions of the IBERDROLA Spanish International, the first of the three international competitions that are held consecutively on the Pitiusa island. This Thursday the semifinals and finals took place, putting the finishing touch to four days of intense competition.

It is worth standing out the great role of the athletes from Denmark, as they have achieved three of the five gold medals that were at stake.

In the women’s singles, the great winner was the Danish Laura Fløj Thomsen, who won gold after beating her compatriot Anne Fuglsang. It was a tremendously disputed game that went in favor of Thomsen 23-21, 17-21 and 21-16.

There was also a Danish winner in the men’s singles, as Victor Ørding Kauffmann beat Frenchman Amaury Lievre. This final was also full of emotion, as Kauffmann had to come back from a set down (18-21, 21-13 and 21-13).

The Danish third medal came in the women’s doubles, which is no surprise as both pairs were Danish. In any case, the duel faced Anne Fuglsang and Frederikke Toft against Lærke Hvid and Emilia Nesic and ended in victory for the latter 21-14 and 21-19.

The men’s doubles final was one of the most intense and was the only one in which there was a Spanish presence. Carlos Piris and Joan Monroy started as the first seeded and with their effort they showed why by making their way to the final. However, in the battle for gold they could not defeat the Dutch Noah Haase and the Bulgarian Alex Vlaar (21-18 and 21-17).

In mixed doubles, the champion duo was the English made up of Jonty Russ and Sian Kelly, who beat the French tandem of Enogat Roy and Anna Tatranova 21-19 and 21-13. The Spaniards Joan Monroy and Ania Setién could not advance to the finals, as they lost to the Gauls 21-13 and 21-13.

Once the IBERDROLA Spanish International is over, it’s time for the U15 and U17 International, the second of the three IBIZA 2022 tournaments. This competition will run until Sunday and will work as an appetizer for the great continental badminton event: the European Championship U15.
