Ibiza, European capital of badminton: two weeks of international competitions in september
Badminton will be breathed in Ibiza during almost the entire month of September, as it will chain three international tournaments whose grand finale will be the European U15 Championships. Thanks to the invaluable support of the Consell Insular d’Eivissa and the Eivissa City Council, and the predisposition of the Balearic Badminton Federation and Badminton Ibiza, this city becomes in the Spanish and European capital of badminton.
From Monday 12 to Thursday 15, the IBERDROLA Spanish International will be played in Ibiza, an absolute category tournament with a great tradition, because it has been played for more than 30 years and has stars in its history of winners like the reigning Olympic and European champion Viktor Axelsen. The last edition was held in La Nucía and Spanish badminton rised to the challenge, as Pablo Abián won the MS gold medal and Paula López and Lorena Uslé won the WD silver medal.
From Friday 16 to Saturday 18 it will be the turn of the Spanish U15 and U17 International, which face the main promises of the continent. Spain has a lot to say in this tournament, since the national academy is taking a step forward in international competitions.
Finally, from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 will be the time for the European U15 Championships 2022. It should have been held in February in Lahti, Finland, but was postponed due to the situation of global pandemic. The assignment of this event to Ibiza was possible, once again, thanks to the involvement of the Consell Insular d’Eivissa and the Ajuntament d’Eivissa, institutions that support the organization of a tournament of recognized prestige on a continental level and that will serve to promote grassroots sport and to promote the island of Ibiza as a tourist and sports destination.
